Connect with your Audience with Idea Contact

All the experts agree on two things:

bullet What you say won't have impact unless you and the audience make a connection that makes you believable.
bullet And that to achieve this connection you must make eye contact.

This much we know. However, from there most give suggestions like make eye contact for about three seconds. While this is true, with everything else you have to concentrate on while presenting, who has time to count! So here's a practical suggestion.

Think I-eye contact. The I stands for Ideas. Let's explain this simple concept. If you were sitting around a table of people you met for the first time, you would look at a person while asking a question or making a comment. Let's say you looked at someone and said, "Who do you work for?" You would keep eye contact until you completed that idea. You would seem shifty and not interested if while asking that question, you looked around at other people at the table.  Similarly, when presenting ideas to an audience try to complete an idea while looking at someone in an audience before moving to another person. Let's illustrate this another way.

Speaker's Words Speaker's Eye Movement
We hold these truths to be self-evident maintain eye contact with person until you finish this line, then shift
that all men are created equal maintain eye with a new person until you finish this line, then shift
that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights maintain eye with a new person until you finish this line, then shift
that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. You get the "eyedea," right?
With these words, Thomas Jefferson...

I like to imagine myself aiming ideas at people in the audience. Their eyes are the center of the bulls eye. I-eye contact helps me keep my eyes on the prize—making that connection with the audience.

Good luck. Come back often.
George Annillo
